through near by jcpenney and jumped into two get away cars. this all unfolded during lunch hour yesterday. they left behind shattered cases. >> it took a lot of guts for them to come in and do it in the middle of afternoon, in the middle of mall. so that's really crazy. >> reporter: investigators say they were able to get descriptions thanks to mall security. they are also reviewing video from the crime. this is still a very active investigation, cara liu. christopher bucari is charged with felony vehicular manslaughter. he slammed his car right into a

destroyed 38 homes. and killed eight people. police look for a man who's accused of killing a san jose couple and leaving their three children without parents. 31-year-old pedro castellon medina is the former boyfriend of jimenez. she and her husband pedro jimenez were shot and killed at their home. the suspect may have been driving a 2006 black nissan maxima sedan. another police involved shooting in anaheim after they're already facing tensions. officers responded to a robbery call at a condominium complex. one officer chased a man. police say a second man in a car started driving toward another officer and that officer opened fire. a resident described what he heard. >> it sounded like about three gunshots and then, then all of

a sudden you could hear the car just speed out and after about a few seconds you could hear the policemen going after him. police say the driver got away and was apparently not hit by the gunfire. they also say that they found the other man about an hour later and arrested him. we're learning tonight that the suspect in a colorado theater shooting was seeing a psychiatrist. james holmes was seeing lynn fenton the director of student services at the university of colorado. holmes attorneys are trying to figure out who leaked information that holmes sent the psychiatrist a notebook with descriptions of the attack. they say the leak violate as gag -- violates a gag order in this case. today aj boik was laid to

rest. this is the third funeral service of the week for victims of the shooting. police arrested man who threatened that he was planning to go on a shooting rampage at his workplace. his employers were getting ready to fire the man. they found guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition in prescott's apartment. when they took him into custody he was wearing a t-shirt that said guns don't kill people, i do. >> we believe this was a significant threat based on some of the mental issue this is individual has. the weapon capability he had. what he said to the employees at pitney bose. >> police are holding prescott

at least 50,000-gallons of water gushed 50 feet into the air this morning. police say that was after a drunk driver slammed right into a fire hydrant in san francisco's castro district. happened about 2:00 this morning. it took crews about three hours to turn off the valve because of the sheer force of the

water. in fact, they eventually parked their truck over that geyser to help them get the situation under control. the driver was taken into custody. in unincorporated san leandro several homes have to be evacuated after a pickup truck went up in flames. authorities say the fire is suspicious, because of what happened to that truck earlier this week. >> reporter: the interior of this truck burned beyond recognition leaving only this charred shell. just before midnight they received a call of it being on fire. neighbors say a police officer was the first on scene. >> he pulled up and then he got his fire extinguisher but because of the smoke he could not get close to the car. there was too much smoke. >> i saw flames, called 911 and they told me to get out. >> reporter: this truck belongs to ryan hall's roommate. hall was in the kitchen when he noticed the fire. once on scene, police evacuated several homes. the fire destroyed a tree, shrubs even a lamp outside the home. with the fire just feet away,

hall told his roommate to get out. he then quickly grabbed his dogs and left the house. >> i grabbed monte right away and we got out of there. >> reporter: these blocks supporting the truck may be one of the reason police officer are ruling this a suspicious fire. because the night before vandals struck. >> the night before they came and stole the tires off his truck that's why it is how it is. >> reporter: paul chamber, ktvu channel 2 news. authorities have released the identity of a man who died in apartment fire in san francisco. 78-year-old roosevelt vose was inside a home when the fire struck. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. mazda is recalling 217,000 of its tribute suvs. this recall comes just a day

after ford recalled its escape suvs. both recalls stem from a problem with the cruise control cable getting snagged on the engine cover. the mazda models affected are those with 3-liter engine. to fix the problem dealers will install fasteners to create more space between the wires and the covers. the national highway traffic safety administration received criticism that faulty pedals caused the problem not a glitch in the system. investigators issued a warning they said beware of a lottery scam that cheated a man out of his money.

a latino couple said they had a winning lottery ticket but needed help to claim the money. the victim then withdrew funds from several banks and gave it to the scammers who then took off with the cash. anyone with information on those suspects is asked to call danville police. they called for a deficit of $1.3 trillion. that would mean a deficit competing a trillion dollars in all four years in president obama's term. the white house also projects the growth rate of 2.3% and calls for a tax increase to reduce the deficit. apple is hoping to expand their reach by buying a company that provides fingerprint readers. the software computer and smart phone giant disclosed the news today in a regulatory filing. apple will pay $356 million for autthentec incorporated.

apple is making the move to strengthen it's digital security capabilities especially when it comes to mobile devices. facebook stocks hit a new low today. facebook's first financial report is as a public company showed that revenue grew 32% but at a slower rate than early they are year. and that is a concern for a newly public company. facebook stock fell by $2.83 or more than 14% in early trading. as the trading went on the stock came back slightly. facebook stock was down $3.14 a share closing at $23.70. from a giant's game to a san francisco marathon a lot going on this weekend. let's turn over to bill martin who's going to help us navigate this weather. >> it's a good weekend coming up. summer is winding down a little bit. a few weeks from the kids heading back to school in the next few weeks. it's been cool around here because of all this fog.

if you are out in daily city, south san francisco, it's windy out by the airport you have fog. it's been fogged in throughout the day and it will be fogged in again tomorrow. i don't think we're going to see a lot of sunshine but we are looking at temperatures inland to begin to warm. that's because there's a high pressure that's been moving in a little bit. but it's been cooler the last few days. 82 in livermore. that's cooler than what you would expect. 81 in fairfield i would expect 90s. as we head into your saturday, little less fog and a little more sun and that's going to get us warmer. temperatures tomorrow should come up a good five to 8 degrees. tonight at the ballpark the giant-dodger game is going to be a big one. 57degrees out there. the fog is going to come in. probably in the next hour or two and so you're going to need a jacket basically for all 9 innings if it goes that long. partly cloudy and breezy, 57

degrees and that's about as warm as it gets. overnight lows tonight are going to be in the 50s. 53 in vallejo, 53 in concord. the fog in most bay area counties so the fog is there saturday morning when you wake up but it burns off a little bit early inland. and then it does this thing that it hangs at the coast. inland numbers come up. forecast for fog at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. all right you kind of see it. it's a little more eroded than it was this morning. this morning we had fog up in the santa rosa area. tomorrow morning just a finger shooting across the valley and fog across the san rafael and napa. not as extensive for tomorrow morning which means more sunshine. as we move through the area. still chilly. it'll warm up into the low 60s. as you move up, you're going to find mid- and low 70s. and as you move to concord you're going to find the 80s. warmer spots are going to get up into the upper 80s.

older women who eat a lot of starchy and sweet foods may increase their risk for a more deadly type of breast cancer. researchers looked at 3,000 women, they found postmenopausal women who ate the most sweet and starchy foods were the most likely to develop er negative cancer. scientists cautioned that the study does not indicate the direct link between sweets and starches and breast cancer. a new study finds men with prostate cancer are more likely to die of other conditions than the cancer itself. the team collected data on the

causes of death among more than 700,000 men. they found more men died of breast cancer while men with heart disease remained the same. previous research has shown about 10% of men died from prostate cancer whether they received treatment or not. a teenager in oakland is critically ill and needs a bone marrow transplant. today officers from the oakland and b.a.r.t. police departments teamed up to try and help find the girl the gift of life. >> the city of oakland cares about our community. this is a step we're taking to work together to find a compatible donor. someone that can save a life. >> reporter: 14-year-old cynthia rodriguez has a brilliant smile and dimples. she also has leukemia. to survive she must find a sponsor. the b.a.r.t. police chief has already learned that he is a potential

donor for another patient. chief canton reiney was screened and recently found out that he is a match for a 5-year- old boy. >> you might not think that you are helping right now but you don't know who you might be able to help in the long run. >> officers are asking the latino community to register since that will give cynthia the best match. bone marrow screening will take place at st. elizabeth church in oakland. new government data say only about 1/4 of americans with the aids virus have it under control. the centers for disease control says more than 800,000 people are not benefiting from life saving aids drugs. the cdc says young people and african americans are the least likely groups to get quality aids care. that's because nearly 20% don't

know they are infected. only 2/3 have regular doctors visits. nancy pelosi says there needs to be more commitment to the address against hiv/aids. >> where there is scientific opportunity we have a moral obligation to fund it. >> speaking at the final day of the 2012 international aids conference, pelosi shared the story of suzy the flower girl at her wedding who died of aids. whoppi goldburg also spoke about how the disease affects children. more fall out over the controversy involving state parks. what the groups that stepped up to help are demanding and what could happen to all the money they raised. >> canadian stealing business from the port of oakland and other ports. that's the claim tonight. we'll tell you the story behind it.

parks like this one throughout the state were on the chopping block because the state said it didn't have enough money to fund them. now groups that raise money to come to the rescue and save those parks are furious and ktvu's rob roth tells us what's happening at anadel state park is a perfect example. >> 300,000 people a year hike or mountain bike in anadel state park. >> it's quiet, it's peaceful. you're in the country. right outside the city. >> reporter: but anadel was one of the parks that the state proposed to close to save money. >> i would hate to see it

vandalized or neglected. >> reporter: then carlos stepped in. >> i said we'll put on a mountain park race. we'll raise a lot of money. >> reporter: but then came the revlation that the parks had $50,000 in two accounts accounts. >> to know that all of that effort was in vain is a real disappointment. we feel it's hard to recoop that. that energy could have been channeled elsewhere. >> reporter: the next time the state cries budget crisis many may write it off as the boy who cried wolf. many are wondering if anyone holds fundraisers if anyone would contribute to that. >> we run a business and we

sacrificed ourselves and our efforts for this false sense of urgency. >> so it'll be hard to get cooperation from the community next time they say there's no money. they'll say, you must have something hidden some where. >> reporter: state lawmakers have called for audits. but they haven't said definitively what they plan to do with all the people planning to save parks. nearly half of the money found in the hidden funds was from entry and concession fees at the parks. and today the leaders of the copark preservation group which donated more than .25 of a million dollars to keep henry koh state park open in the next three years says if the state legislature does not return that money they will desolve their agreement with the state and take back their donations. >> this was obviously money provided by the california citizenry for the state parks it makes no sense that this money should not go back to the california parks particularly in these tough times. >> lawmakers will take up the

issue when they return from summer recess in august. as of today the state controller and the department of finance which are both investigating hundreds of other special funds are $2.3 billion apart in their calculations. >> california is one of 24 states that has reached a settlement with a drug provider. they say mckesson medication over charged them for medication. california attorney general camela harris says our state will receive $23.5 million of that settlement. the federal government settled a similar suit in april for $187 million. a san jose software engineer was sentenced to life in prison for murdering an attorney on the opposite side of a legal dispute. 53-year-old jason kai was sentenced yesterday to life in

prison plus 25 years. kai was found guilty of fatally shooting attorney vi show outside her attorney's office. ath of kai's wife who drowned in their pool. kai was accused but never convicted of causing his wife's death. airline passengers have spent a record amount to fly to far this year. the average price of a domestic ticket soared to $373 in the first part of this year. that's a nearly 5% jump over the same period last year. the previous all time high was $370 which was set last spring. the price surge wasn't a boon for carriers as you might think. u.s. airlines reported a $1.7 billion loss for the quarter. the government released more bad economic news today this time on the gross domestic product. the commerce department says the gdp slowed to a 1.5% growth rate in the second three months

the transportation security administration says that it has adjusted its procedures to detect a new type of explosive

used in underwear bomb. the tsa says it learned about the explosives from the cia which had a double agent smuggle an underwear bomb from yemen. terrorists plan to use the bomber on the anniversary of osama bin laden's death. four men pleaded not guilty to murder and other felonies in connection with a triple homicide outside a party in san leandro last year. the men are charged with several counts of murder and attempted murder and if convicted they will be eligible for the death penalty or a life sentence without parol. the killings happened in the early morning hours of october 2nd when someone fired gunshots into a parked ford explorer after a tattoo parlor. dozens of coast guard helped stop 55,000 pounds of

santa clara county is scrambling today to try to get rid of an infestation of the oriental fruit fly. agriculture officials found those flies and what they're planning on doing to try to get rid of them, robert handa has

the story. >> reporter: the infestation in morgan hill is a concern in many ways. the infestation is a concern for crops but it can also lead to problems for consumers who could lose their favorite fruits and produce. >> reporter: annie is going to buy her produce. >> it's really fresh obviously. the trees are that are right. and the fruits are very sweet. >> reporter: santa clara workers are setting more traps today aimed at the pest that attacks 200 different types of produce. four flies were found in morgan hill probably transported by undeclared produce from the hawaii island or southeast asian. the state declared an emergency yesterday. starting tomorrow, workers will begin applying bait stations in a 16 square mile area. >> and those bait stations are intended to attract the male

fruit fly which lands on these spots that are up in trees, they land on the spot they feed on it and there's a little bit of insecticide in there and they die. >> reporter: growers are obviously concerned if the bait stations don't work, the state could quarantine fruit from this area. andy's orchard was once called the nation's finest farms by gourmet magazine and a quarantine would cut off many customers not just in morgan hill. >> we also sell wholesale to other places in the bay area. we might not be able to do that. we sell our fruit nationally as well. we have a mail order business. >> reporter: ther era dication will take several months. the southern california grower gills onions has now expanded a recall to include

over toward milbury. you're going to have cool days with temperatures in the 50s and very little clearing which is not atypical for this time of year this is what you would expect out there. the fog does what it did last night but not as aggressively. there'll be more sunshine more rapidly tomorrow and that will allow temperatures in the bay and inland to come up. these are the highs for today. look at fairfield still 81, 84 in liver mother. highs as we head into tomorrow we're going to see a lot of upper 80s tomorrow in those warm spots. as we go through time here, the fog is going to come in overnight as you know. today was cool and mild. this low is going to budge a little bit. this fog is going to come this way. temperatures are going to increase. 2degrees at the coast. 4degrees at the bay. maybe more inland. temperatures on the increase, saturday and sunday temperatures warmer still. sunday is going to be the warmest day on your bay area weekend. the fog footprint, there it is. not as bad as we had this morning. the fog is there but it burns off more rapidly. you get more sunshine. it's going to be a really nice

weekend. it's interesting again i pointed out last night, see how the fog splits the heat. those are the 90s. splits it because it shoots up into the sacramento area. sacramento tomorrow still pretty much mostly in the upper 80s. maybe a few low 90s. as we go through sunday, it's been going on a long time. it's going to be a nice weekend out there because this event can get hot. about 87 degrees on sunday, that's pretty bearable for the gilroy garlic festival this week. the weather is about as good as it gets for this time of year in that area. these will be the forecast highs for saturday. sunday if you want to do the math just tack on three or four or five degrees to these and you will see where you will be on sunday. forecast with the five day in view and your bay area weekend in view as gasia points out a big weekend. there's a lot going on this week -- weekend the weather is going to cooperate. the rest of the games look

the 34th annual gilroy garlic festival got under way this morning. festival organizers released this video of the president lighting the garlic torch. it includes food, music and a lot of other entertainment. gates open tomorrow morning at 10:00 in the morning. tickets run $8 for adults and children. traffic is always heavy through gilroy on garlic festival weekend. children of active military members spend a lot of time saying goodbye to their families. but today they got to look at a play to reconnect. >> it's very nice to have all these museums open for my family. >> reporter: carlos resendez has four children. today he turned three of them lose inside the children's

permit but the casino can only open the main floor and all customers have to have access to all of the gaming tables. there can be no private rooms or partitions around the games. casino matrix operators say they will now start hiring and open the casino in the next weeks. a church is pitted with their neighbors. coming up here, the special faith a danville church wants to create for the community and the action neighbors are taking to try to stop it. and only on 2, he lost 100 pounds with the help of a special bay area program targeted at overweight children. his success story and how he's using it to reach out to other obese children.
